How Does Massage Therapy Alleviate Headaches?

Massage Therapy for Headaches

Having worked as a registered massage therapist for several years, I’ve noticed that many people suffer from headaches or migraines. Frequently, I get asked if massage therapy can help. So, I decided to write this post to explain how effective massage therapy can be in relieving headaches and associated pains.

To understand how massage therapy helps, it’s essential to know the three common types of headaches: sinus headaches, tension headaches, and migraines. If you ever experience an intense, unprecedented headache, seek medical attention immediately. It could be a sign of a severe condition like high blood pressure or an aneurysm. However, if it’s a chronic condition that doesn’t let you live your life pain-free, keep reading to learn more about how massage therapy can help you with your headaches.

Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches typically occur above the eyes and can spread below the eyes, where the sinuses are located. Tension headaches can also affect the same area. To distinguish between the two, bend over and look down for about 15 seconds. If the pain and pressure increase, it’s likely a sinus headache, which could be due to an infection or inflammation. Use a cold compress to reduce inflammation and see your doctor to rule out infection.

How Massage Therapy in Oakville Can Help:

Once an infection is ruled out, massage therapy can alleviate discomfort by releasing tight muscles in the neck, head, and face, which can refer pain to the sinus area and cause congestion. Techniques to loosen congestion and facilitate drainage, followed by cold

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common type and can sometimes be as intense as migraines. They are usually caused by muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, which can activate trigger points, causing pain in the head and face. The pain is often felt at the base of the skull, around the ears, temples, and behind the eyes but can occur anywhere in the head.

How Massage Therapy at BeActive Oakville Can Help:

Massage therapy is highly effective for relieving tension headaches. A quick assessment helps identify the contributing muscles and factors. Techniques to increase circulation and reduce muscle tension, including trigger point release, deep tissue massage, acupuncture, and stretching, are used. If stress or poor posture is a factor, relaxation techniques or postural corrections are included to prevent recurring headaches.

Migraines

Migraines are severe headaches that can vary in intensity and often significantly impact daily activities. They can be triggered by various factors, including allergies, food sensitivities, stress, hormonal imbalances, and more. Migraines are typically accompanied by an aura, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes nausea.

How Massage Therapy at BeActive Oakville Can Help:

Massage therapy is not recommended during an active migraine but can help prevent future occurrences. It reduces stress and neck muscle tension, especially in the suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull, which are often linked to migraines. These muscles, when tight, can affect blood flow to the brain and cause pain and aura. Specific massage techniques can relieve tension in these muscles, potentially preventing migraines.

Hydrotherapy, using warm and cold compresses, can complement massage therapy. Warm compresses relax muscles and increase circulation, while cold compresses constrict blood vessels to reduce excessive blood flow to the brain, which can be helpful if a migraine is starting.

As someone who understands the impact of headaches firsthand, I am committed to helping alleviate and prevent headaches at BeActive Oakville Physiotherapy & Wellness, regardless of the type you suffer from.

Custom orthotics versus over-the-counter foot inserts

So you’re thinking about getting orthotics, but you’ve never had them before. Or maybe you’ve had them before and want to know which kind is right for you. The foot insert you need is the one that’s right for you.

Some people choose over-the-counter inserts, while others go with custom orthotics. What are the pros and cons of each method? Let’s take a look!

But what if you can’t decide which one is best for you? Well, we’re here to help!

In this article, we’ll examine the pros and cons of both over-the-counter and custom orthotics so that you can make an informed decision about which option is right for you. Over-the-counter foot inserts and custom orthotics are different options for correcting your feet’ natural position.

While both can be effective, there are pros and cons to each, as well as important differences in how they’re made and used.

  • Custom orthotics are made by a pedorthist after an in-depth analysis of your feet, which means they’re custom-fit to your unique anatomy. They can be made out of a variety of materials, including plastic or EVA material, and have many different designs depending on what you need them for.
  • Over-the-counter foot inserts are mass-produced products designed to help provide support for problems with your feet. They’re typically made of plastic, foam, or gel pads are available in many different shapes and sizes. The downside is that they don’t fit every person perfectly—if you have very narrow feet or unusually shaped feet, they may not work well for you.
  • Over-the-counter foot inserts are a great option if you have mild discomfort or pain in your feet and ankles. They can be very reasonably priced (depending on the brand), and they only take a few minutes to apply. You don’t need to see a doctor or pedorthist; just go online or to the store, pick up your inserts, and put them in your shoes!

The pros of custom orthotics include:

1) They are made to fit your foot exactly, which means they’re more likely to stay in place and provide support where you need it most.

2) They can be more comfortable than over-the-counter inserts because they mold to your feet over time, while over-the-counter inserts are often uncomfortable as they are generic in size and do not serve foot problems.

3) custom orthotics may have features like air pockets and gel pads that improve comfort and performance even more than an over-the-counter insert would.

4) Patients can get custom orthotics sandals or slip-on for summer or in-house use while you can also benefit from custom orthotics with their condition.

When it comes to your feet, you want to make sure that you’re doing everything you can to keep them healthy. Custom orthotics are more expensive than over-the-counter ones, but they last longer and provide more support for your feet and ankles. If you have moderate discomfort or pain in your feet or ankles, custom orthotics may be a good fit for you. Plus, they come with a warranty, so if anything goes wrong then pedorthists modify them.

We have our pedorthist Ashton who has been practicing pedorthist since 2007, treating acute and chronic lower limb conditions. As a Canadian Certified Pedorthist, Ashton has the rare skill set of not only assessment and fit but also the fabrication of custom foot orthoses and footwear modification. Ashton believes strongly in interdisciplinary and client-centered care that is accessible and inclusive.

“Every person is unique and your orthotics and treatment plan should be created as unique as you are.”

Foot health is one of the most important parts of preventative foot care because it’s where the rest of the body will suffer if it isn’t taken care of. It’s very easy to get foot pain and injuries, especially in active people. Caring for your feet starts with healthy blood flow and a fit that supports this as well as possible. While custom orthotics are more suited to particular cases, OTC products can be a great starting point to alleviate your foot issues in general.

While over-the-counter foot inserts are cheaper and more readily available, they cannot offer the same benefits as custom-made over-the-counter foot inserts. However, it is important to remember that both forms of over-the-counter foot inserts have their strengths.

If your feet are bothering you, and over-the-counter inserts don’t help, you may want to consider going for a custom orthotic. Prolonged use of over-the-counter foot inserts can lead to more health issues. Custom orthotics are worn all day from active hours like standing, walking, and all the time you spend on your feet.

Plus, they can be molded to an individual’s feet. They will provide more support needed to combat and even prevent foot-related problems such as calluses, hammer toes, and plantar fasciitis.

I hope you have found this guide helpful, and I wish you all the best as you take the first step toward treating your foot pain more naturally. Above all, if you do decide to get a custom orthotics, make sure to get it from an experienced pedorthist.

But what’s the best way to do that? Contact BeActive Physiotherapist Oakville clinic today and book an appointment today.

Winter Wellness: Why You Should See a Chiropractor for a Healthy and Happy Frosty Season!

As the winter chill sets in, navigating through the Canadian winter can be a challenging feat for your health. During the winters, many of us experience one or the other health and mental issues ranging from joint pain to the heightened risk of catching a cold or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD); our bodies often face unique challenges during this season. At BeActive Physiotherapy, our team of physiotherapists, chiropractors and registered massage therapists is here to guide you through the winter blues and help you maintain your well-being.

Let’s explore why a visit to a chiropractor during winter is not just beneficial but essential.

Getting chiropractic care during the winters not only would help you to prevent some of the conditions from happening but would also help to keep you functioning at your best when the temperatures begin to drop. If you are thinking of skipping or procrastinating visiting your chiropractor, below are some reasons to rethink and schedule a chiropractic appointment.

 1. Joint Pain Relief Amidst the Cold:

    • Fun Fact: Did you know that changes in atmospheric pressure can impact joint pain?

In the colder months, the viscosity of your joint fluids increases, and your muscles tend to contract, leading to discomfort and limited mobility. The colder air can make your joints stiff and muscles reluctant to stretch. Our chiropractic techniques are designed to address these issues effectively. Through targeted adjustments, your chiropractor can help loosen your joints and muscles, promoting improved circulation and reducing pain. Consistent sessions throughout the winter months contribute to enhanced flexibility, allowing you to carry out your daily activities with ease and comfort. Our chiropractors at BeActive Physiotherapy specialize in adjustments to keep your muscles and joints flexible, reducing pain caused by the winter chill.

2. Cold and Flu Prevention Beyond Immunity:

    • Question: Did you know that spinal adjustments can strengthen your immune system?

This year, your health concerns extend beyond the flu as the pandemic persists. The winter months bring challenges like inadequate sleep, heightened stress, and crowded shopping areas. To fortify your immune system, consider visiting your chiropractor. Beyond relieving aches and pains, spinal adjustments realign your spine, promoting clear communication between your brain and immune system.

A healthy spine enhances your body’s ability to react swiftly and effectively to infections. Strengthening your immunity through chiropractic care not only aids in overall well-being but equips you to confidently navigate the elements when venturing outside, offering an added layer of protection in these uncertain times.

Winter is notorious for compromising immune systems; chiropractic care can play a role in preventing colds and flu. Beyond pain relief, our adjustments set off a chain reaction, boosting nervous system function and fortifying your body’s defense against germs.

  1. Handling the Elements Outside:
    • Stats: Winter brings an increased risk of slips and falls; proper preparation is key.

As highlighted earlier, increased stiffness heightens the likelihood of injuries, especially for winter sports enthusiasts. Opting for winter chiropractic care becomes a smart choice to minimize injury risks when engaging in activities like skiing or ice skating. Beyond the usual adjustments, chiropractic care during winter incorporates tailored exercises and stretching routines. Dress in layers to keep warm, and don’t forget to warm up your muscles before heading outside.

Our chiropractors can guide you in selecting the most suitable exercises and stretches, not just for the athletically-inclined but also for those preferring milder outdoor activities or tackling winter chores like snow shoveling. Surprisingly, winter sports injuries and back pain from snow shoveling rank among the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care during the colder months.

Shoveling snow? Our chiropractors advise on proper techniques to avoid muscle strain and injury. Check out this video created by our team of chiropractors and physiotherapists on how to properly shovel the snow. If you still have questions or would like to be better prepared for the winters, contact our team to schedule an appointment.

  1. Winter Sports Ready:
    • Friendly Tip: Planning a skiing trip? Ensure your body is in proper alignment and well-prepared.

Engaging in winter sports like skiing and skating adds an element of fun to the season, but it’s crucial to be aware of potential risks. Common winter sports injuries encompass spinal issues, knee problems, ankle sprains, and more. While sledding is a prevalent cause of winter sports injuries, activities like skiing, ice skating, hockey, and snowboarding also pose risks.

The icy and snowy conditions heighten the chances of slips and falls, contributing to more than 2.8 million older individuals seeking emergency treatment for fall injuries annually, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These injuries can result in severe consequences, including broken bones.

Chiropractic care tailored for winter sports injuries, slips, and falls involves targeted stretching to enhance flexibility, chiropractic adjustments to alleviate joint tightness, and muscle work aimed at breaking up scar tissue. Chiropractic care helps prevent musculoskeletal injuries common in winter sports.

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned enthusiast, our services can aid in rebuilding strength and coordination. Looking for more sports related injuries and how our experienced team of physiotherapists and chiropractors can help you? Learn more here or contact us today for sports injury rehabilitation.

  1. Combating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
    • Did You Know: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects many during the colder months.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a prevalent condition during the fall and winter, often regarded as a form of depression. Stressors like colder temperatures, reduced sunlight exposure, and overcast days commonly trigger SAD, leading to a decline in interest, energy, and motivation.

While specialists consider SAD incurable, chiropractic care emerges as a supportive avenue. Through chiropractic adjustments, the communication pathways of your central nervous system are realigned, aiding in the regulation of melatonin and serotonin levels. These adjustments play a role in managing emotions during the fall and winter seasons. Beyond adjustments, our chiropractor can recommend specific lifestyle changes to assist you in better managing the symptoms of SAD.

Chiropractic care can play a role in regulating hormone production and managing SAD symptoms. Beyond adjustments, our chiropractors provide practical lifestyle changes to cope with SAD effectively.

  1. Stress Management for a Serene Winter:
    • Friendly Reminder: The holiday season can bring stress; chiropractic care can be a valuable resource.

Navigating stress, especially during the holiday season, can be challenging without the right support. Our team of chiropractors is adept at employing various treatments to alleviate stress, fostering not only a healthy body but also a sound mind.

Understanding Diabetic Custom Orthotics & Shoe Inserts

Understanding Diabetic Orthotics

Diabetic orthotics are medical-grade shoe inserts made from durable and highly supportive materials. These inserts provide support for the feet and ankles that can help improve stability, aid in recovery from injury, ease pain associated with diabetic neuropathy, and more.

The goal of a custom diabetic orthotics is to improve circulation and reduce pain in patients who have diabetes or high blood sugar levels. Diabetic orthotic inserts are designed specifically for people with diabetes who have foot problems such as nerve damage or swelling.

There are several different types of diabetic orthotics available including arch supports, heel cups/heel lifts, and other specialized footwear products designed especially for those suffering from diabetic conditions.

What are diabetic orthotics or custom shoe inserts?

Diabetic orthotics are custom-made devices that fit inside of shoes and provide support to the foot. At BeActive Physiotherapy Oakville, we use durable EVA material, and they come in different shapes and sizes depending on your needs. Some diabetic inserts help with plantar fasciitis (painful inflammation of the arch), while others are designed to help with shin splints (painful inflammation at the bottom of your heel).

Diabetic insoles help you walk comfortably even when you are wearing normal shoes because they provide cushioning against hard surfaces such as tile floors or concrete stairs in addition to giving your heel more room while walking so it doesn’t rub against parts of shoes during long walks outside!

If you would like to learn more about custom orthotics, read in our blog here.

What are the benefits of Diabetic custom orthotic inserts?

Diabetic custom orthotic inserts are designed to help relieve pain and improve your overall comfort. They also help to reduce the pressure on your feet, knees, and back.

  • Reduced Pressure: The most common reason people who have diabetes experience foot problems is because they have lost sensation in their feet due to nerve damage caused by high blood sugar levels. This causes them to walk with an abnormal gait (walking pattern) that can eventually cause joint damage and even bone problems in the future if left untreated. By wearing a diabetic insert you will be able to reduce this pressure on your feet which will allow them time for healing while still providing support where it’s needed most: around the ankle area where most foot injuries occur during daily activities such as walking or outdoor like a trail or uneven surfaces.
  • Increased Stability: It’s important for diabetics who must use their hands frequently throughout everyday life like working at home or going grocery shopping without assistance from others nearby so having proper footwear allows them greater control over how much weight is being placed upon each individual part of their body – including those areas closest related towards its centerline (such as between toes). This helps prevent injury from occurring due not only to increased stability but also because it helps to prevent a loss of balance by providing greater support for your ankles and knees as well.
  • Increased Comfort – The extra padding in these inserts will provide cushioning on top of your feet that allows you to walk or stand more comfortably without discomfort from soreness or blisters from wearing shoes without insoles (if you have some type of foot disease).

What types of conditions benefit from diabetic foot inserts or orthotics?

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Shin splints
  • Hallux limitation or Rigidus (a painful condition that occurs when the big toe cannot move in its socket)
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Hammertoe. This nerve pain is caused by pressure on a specific area of the foot and leg. It can be treated with orthotics.
  • Corns and calluses are common problems for people who have diabetes because they don’t get enough circulation in their feet due to poor circulation due to nerve damage from neuropathy (nerve damage). Footwear that isn’t properly fitted will exacerbate these conditions even more so if you have neuropathy!

How can I get a pair of diabetic custom orthotics?

If you are in Oakville, look no further! Diabetic foot inserts or custom orthotics can be prescribed to you by a pedorthist at BeActive Physiotherapy Oakville, after determining if you are a candidate for the custom orthotics. They will also be able to help you decide which type of custom orthotics is best for your feet and legs.

1. What is ankle pain?

Just as our foot, the ankle is also a complex system and structure of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. Ankles and heels are the part of our foot that takes on most of our body weight. However, when any type of accident occurs like an accident, injury, or overuse, it becomes vulnerable and can cause or trigger ankle pain.

2. What causes ankle pain?

Most ankle pains are originated with some type of injury like roll over, twist or turn which then results in an ankle sprain, strain, or fractures. Ankle pain can also be caused due to conditions like arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Obese people are prone to generate knee, leg, and/ or ankle pain because of the increased body weight. Some jobs require people to stand, run and walk for long hours of shifts which can also be factored in as causes of ankle pain. Our team of pedorthists and physiotherapists will perform a thorough assessment and examination with the latest technologies to understand the root cause of the ankle pain and provide you with custom orthotics and physiotherapy treatment plans.

FAQs

1. Can my orthotics be repaired or get a service upgrade?

Of course, yes! Unless it is already broken or has encountered a major accident, your custom-made foot orthotics can be serviced and maintained for a long and durable life to support your foot with proper balance and posture. We, at BeActive Physiotherapy Oakville, believe in repairing, refurbishing, and reviving your custom-made orthotics instead of outright replacing them.

When to get my orthotics checked?

As we have previously mentioned, BeActive Physiotherapy Oakville always believes in refurbishing and repairing your orthotics, therefore, it is always recommended that you get your orthotics checked at least once per year. You may not notice anything unusual or wrong with your orthotics, but your pedorthist may. We are proud to always ensure that you’re getting absolute performance through custom-made orthotics.

Can children wear custom orthotics?

Until about the age of six, children usually don’t need orthotics. Keep an eye on their gait and study their foot alignment and arch to see if there are any abnormalities. If you do happen to see asymmetrical wear patterns or instability in standing, then it’s time to check with a pedorthist. Contact BeActive Physiotherapy Oakville to learn more about how you can help your child from an early age to avoid any major foot, ankle, or knee issues.

Osteoarthritis

  2. What is the difference between osteoarthritis and arthritis?
  3. What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis?
  4. What are the 4 stages of osteoarthritis?
  5. What are the treatment options for osteoarthritis?

1. Osteoarthritis – What is it? How does it develop?

Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition that can start with no obvious reason. Degeneration of the cartilage on the ends of bone begins to degrade, thin and can disappear. Though the degeneration begins in the cartilage, osteoarthritis can affect the joint capsule, ligaments, muscles and underlying bone. The leading cause of osteoarthritis is physical inactivity in people over the age of 65 years of age, as cartilage needs moderate load through physical activity to regenerate itself.

Previously thought of Wear and tear disease which was completely wrong. Osteoarthritis = Joint failure.

Osteoarthritis commonly occurs in the hips, knees, wrist, hands and fingers.

How does a healthy knee joint look like?

To provide an example, let’s talk about the largest joint in our body and see how a healthy knee joint looks. The knee joint basically gets us moving every day as it allows the knee to extend and bend back and forth. As you can see in the left image, the knee joint is made up of cartilage, bone, fibrous articular capsule, synovial articular capsule, and ligament.

Fundamentally, cartilage doesn’t contain any blood supply; however, a lot of recent studies show that lack of physical activity, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of osteoarthritis around weight-bearing joints like hip, knee, and spine. cartilage damage happens leading to stiffness, pain, inflammation, and restricted joint movement.

Synovial fluid keeps the Cartilage nourished. With proper motion, cartilage can regenerate.

How do you know if you have osteoarthritis?

The most common symptom of osteoarthritis is pain around the joints. To understand the condition better, you should observe the following symptoms and connect with your physiotherapist or family doctor for a clinical assessment and diagnosis coupled with an effective physiotherapy treatment plan.

According to the Arthritis Society, arthritis affects over 6 million Canadians. Over 20% of the population age 15 and older are having difficulties with activities of daily living. Arthritis causes pain, inflammation, and it can affect one or multiple joints at once.

People who suffer from osteoarthritis are observed reporting soreness and stiffness around joints, decreased range of motion, and pain or swelling around the joint. Contact our highly trained physiotherapist for an assessment today!

2. What is the difference between osteoarthritis and arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are just different types of arthritis that share similar characteristics but are different due to the cause behind the joint symptoms. Osteoarthritis is developed because of Overloading, Injury, Muscle weakness or physical inactivity whereas rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that may affect multiple joints in the body.

The speed of onset in rheumatoid arthritis is comparatively faster or rapid in nature, ranging from over weeks to months. On the other hand, osteoarthritis is slower and its symptoms can sometimes come and go. For more information on arthritis, read the blog here.

3. What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis?

It is reckoned that all forms of arthritis cause a bit of pain around the joints. Soreness, stiffness, tenderness, and pain are supposed to be the most common symptoms reported by patients suffering from osteoarthritis. A feeling of discomfort and lack of motion is also identified to be a prominent symptoms of osteoarthritis.

The stiffness in the joint is most likely to be experienced in the morning or after long hours of a break but fortunately, physiotherapy exercises can act as a driving force to get you out of that pain. Our physiotherapists at BeActive will perform an in-depth physical assessment of all the joints in the body followed by a customized, effective, and productive physiotherapy treatment plan for pain management, improve range of motion and increasing strength

The feeling of instability or looseness or an urge of giving away are all red flags to be considered for an assessment. Don’t suffer in pain, call us today.

4. What are the four stages of osteoarthritis?

Stage 1: Minor

  • Least severe stage of OA
  • feel little to no pain
  • very minimal damage to the cartilage
  • little bone spur growth

Stage 2: Mild

  • show more bone spur growth
  • start to show some symptoms of joint pain, affected area will start to feel stiff after long sedentary periods

Stage 3 – Moderate

  • joint becomes inflamed and starts causing discomfort during normal daily activities
  •  obvious erosion to the cartilage surface between bones and fibrillation narrows the gap between the bones.

Stage 4 – Sevre

  • most painful
  • cartilage is almost completely gone, leading to an inflammatory response
  • The joint space between the bones are considerably reduced, causing the cartilage to wear off, leaving the joint stiff.

5. What are the treatment options for osteoarthritis?

Treatment of osteoarthritis aims at reducing the key symptoms and improving joint function with adequate education, proper exercises, and a weight-reduction plan if required. Physiotherapy and exercises are considered to be the best relief options when it comes to the treatment of osteoarthritis, according to studies.

Traditional TMJ Treatments and Their Limitations

TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, is a widespread issue that can cause significant discomfort, affecting your ability to eat, talk, and sleep. Traditional treatments often include:

  • Temporary TMJ Splints: These are used to decrease tension in the muscles and joints but are generally not customized and are only a short-term solution.
  • Pain Management Medications: Including NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, and corticosteroids, these address symptoms temporarily but come with risks like addiction and gastrointestinal issues.
  • Surgical Interventions: Procedures such as arthrocentesis and open-joint surgeries might be recommended, which are invasive and treat symptoms without addressing the underlying cause of jaw misalignment.
